WHY CONSIDER IT
Sockets provide a planning route to customize a chosen item using gems, although the socket count is random.
When it fits: Use on an unsocketed item you intend to keep, when you can spare two gems including one at least its level.
The tradeoff: Requires the target item and two gems; the number of sockets is unpredictable.
